Through the Decades with Diana Ross

In honor of Diana Ross’s 75th birthday two weeks ago, some of her most iconic looks throughout the decades will be displayed. Since the early 1960s, Diana Ross has been doing everything in her power to stand out and be a star. Some might call her a diva but at least her outfits are always on point.

In the 1960s, Diana Ross always made sure to stand out in the iconic Motown singing group, The Supremes. According to Diana Ross E! True Hollywood Story, group members, Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, and Diana Ross would all plan on wearing a certain dress, but last-minute Diana’s dress would somehow be ruined, and she would show up wearing something different from the other girls. Finally, Diana got what she had always dreamed, a big break. In 1964 when The Supremes were touring with Dick Clark as a small no named act, their single Where Did Our Love Go took off. The Supremes came home superstars, and Diana Ross came home as the new lead singer. The photo above shows Ross wearing a classic Hollywood satin styled dress. She paired it with dangly diamond earrings, short bob, and a cat eye.

As Diana Ross transitioned into a solo artist in the 1970s, she also had to transform her image. Designer Bob Mackie helped create the over the top style Ross is known for today. Mackie made this sheer, bejeweled ensemble for the photoshoot for the Everything is Everything album cover in 1970.

On the stormy night of July 21, 1983, in Central Park, Diana Ross fearlessly performed in the pouring rain to an 800,000-person crowd wearing a bright red, sparkly pantsuit with a cape flying in the wind. Ross attempted to keep the audience to remain calm and stick out the performance, however, the storm worsened and forced people to leave. Ross ended up coming back to complete her entire show the next day for the rained-out audience.

At the Clinton Inauguration in 1993, Diana Ross sang a powerful rendition of God Bless America. She sang stunningly in a royal blue sweetheart-neckline ballgown paired with a red puff jacket, red gloves, and red hoop earrings.

On March 17, 2004, Diana Ross sang on stage at Wembley Stadium in London, England. She wore a slimming white dress with jewel embroidered detail on the bodice and bottom of the dress, and she paired the dress with a dramatic feather headpiece.

As an early birthday celebration, Diana Ross performed at the 2019 Grammy Award Show. She wore a red tulle-skirt ballgown with sheer sleeves and a red satin bodice that made her look anything but 75 years old.

Over the years Diana Ross never failed to display her inner diva through her glamorous and outrageous outfits. Each decade she went above and beyond, whether it was a simple, classic old Hollywood look or a sparkly, caped red pantsuit. Even at her 75th birthday celebration, the Motown superstar’s look was spot on.
