The Max Mara Woman: RTW Fall 2021

Italian-based brand Max Mara is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year since its creation in 1951 by designer and visionary Achille Maramotti. What better way to celebrate the timeless yet innovative brand than creating a collection for Milan Fashion Week that highlights the individuality and power that women hold today?

A brand that started with dressing the wives of local doctors and lawyers has grown to reflect these same women who went on to be doctors and lawyers themselves.  Creative Director Ian Griffiths, who has carried this legacy for more than 30 years now, says the Max Mara women “became chief executive officers and started sitting on the boards. Max Mara has grown up with them.”  Max Mara now represents “women on the go, women who want to change the world,” said Griffiths.

This season’s collection mixes British rebellion and classic Italian style incorporating earth tones and military green to the pieces. Wool and cashmere coats predominated in most of the looks and were seen alongside midi skirts with borcegos, a subtle homage to the late supermodel Stella Tennant. Accessories such as oversized sunglasses and Queen Elizabeth-inspired head scarves were also seen with most looks. Their anniversary year, 1951, was incorporated in their coats and sweaters, the lettering embedded on the front and back of select pieces.

Griffiths mixed urban fashion with elements of the countryside with the intention of attracting a younger audience without losing its traditional and timeless roots. Griffiths says, “What is there that is more classic and at the same time rebellious and frisky than some of the key elements of the British culture?”
