The Great British Fashion Show
Ahh, the crisp, golden season of fall has come to greet us once again. Its advent, of course, means all things pumpkin spice and red scarves layered over thick sweaters, and the luxury of hour-long walks without sweating through your shirt and—just kidding! The only thing of importance that the arrival of autumn brings is the newest season of television’s greatest program. If you’re anything like me, you’ve engaged in a disturbing amount of Great British Bake Off (or, as it is called in the vulgar American tongue, The Great British Baking Show). I’m talking rewatch upon rewatching— including the holiday specials. I’m talking honestly grieving the fact that James Morton of series three somehow did not win the entire damn contest. But I digress…
Fall is finally here, and the newest piping-hot batch of Bake-Off contestants have popped out of the oven just in time for judges Paul and Prue to evaluate their creations. After watching the first episode of the latest season, I thought, “why not do a little judging of my own?” I won’t be critiquing their baking, of course—I’ll leave that to the esteemed duo, Paul and Prue. I will, however, sink my teeth into some of the fashion on display in the tent.
I would like to begin with the first week’s star baker, Jürgen. If you couldn’t tell by his name or his sober choice of shirt, Jürgen is German, and unabashedly so. His no-frills choice of dress and eyewear are disciplined, practical, and efficient, just like his bakes. Jürgen’s look gets the job done—easy as apple pie.
Crystelle’s look feels like it comes from a world in which Strawberry Shortcake dyed her hair black and decided to wear mascara and eyeliner because she’s going through an emo phase and needs to get the hell out of Strawberryland. Crystelle’s slightly puffy sleeves and girly, red scrunchie are complemented by the elegant waves of her dark hair and the chic silver hoops dangling from her ears.
We have our resident VSCO girl, and I couldn’t be happier. Where shall I begin? The cotton-candy-colored knit top layered over lettuce trim white tee? The classic gold hoops? Perhaps even the top knot on her head that is keeping her flowing locks out of her cake batter? Chef’s kiss! Or should I say baker’s kiss?
Giuseppe’s silver Italian curls match his gray-and-white patterned long sleeve shirt. This attention to detail is unsurprising, having borne witness to the nearly perfect baking skills he displayed in the first week’s challenges. And let’s not ignore his mustache. Move over, Cake Boss, there’s a new Italian baker in town.
Lizzie must be prescient, there’s no other way to explain the fact that she showed up on her first day looking like an inverted copy of the tent’s fashion king—host Noel Fielding. Maybe she stores her psychic powers in the fiery space buns on either side of her head. She‘s clearly some sort of sorceress because how else could she pull off 3-D bunny shoes with a fluffy tail and all? I would not mind seeing her reach the finals so that I could get a look at an entire season’s worth of her outfits.
The first episode of this season of Great British Bake Off brought the goods, both baking- and fashion-wise. I cannot wait to see what the bakers cook up next.
Strike out,
