If anyone still longs to fulfill their Princess Diaries fantasy, Sandy Liang’s Spring 2024 Ready-to-Wear Collection will satisfy every royal craving. The recently debuted pieces all carry the utmost hyper-feminine energy illustrated through tulle/ lace dresses, taffeta skirts, and silk blazers and bows. The New York native held her showcase at the Cooper Hewitt Museum Garden with Parker Radcliff's music. This ambiance upheld Liang’s “girlhood” inspirations. Silk ribbons, pastel pinks, yellows, creams, and the occasional vibrant red-orange were the primary colors adorned on the runway. Some Y2K/mermaid elements stood out through mini skirts (one bedazzled), capri pants, and seashell-printed cropped t-shirts. Not to mention the beautiful necklaces and earrings worn by models, each consisting of freshwater pearls and silver seashells.  According to Vogue’s Review, Liang drew inspiration from the cult classic and Sofia Coppola’s directorial debut Virgin Suicides (1999). The film surrounds a family with five teenage girls, the Lisbon sisters.

Liang built this collection based on the girls’ wardrobe, which consisted of white lace sleepwear,  school girl mini skirts, and thong sandals. This collection exhibits what she believes they would wear day to day. Each piece exudes a mystical yet playful elegance while sustaining a boarding school-esque uniformed look. A fan favorite accessory has been the silk pointed ballet flats varying in white, green, and royal blue. As well as shoulder bags that look from afar like giant bows tied around selected models’ wrists. Liang’s use of mainly white rose embellishments was the perfect touch to each piece, signifying the youthful innocence in the collection theme.

Liang explained to Vogue that her recurring inspiration has stemmed from groups of women who are “matching–intentionally or not.” She has always seen beauty in pattern and unison, whether it is school uniforms, corporate offices, or monarchy. This ideology has carried into her brand’s specific theme and look, which has made it recognizable. All girls deserve Sandy Liang pieces and get to channel the Y2k princess energy we all deserve!
