The Devil is in the Details (But He Still Wears Prada)

We all live incredibly busy lives. There is work, there is school, there are friends and there are friends that might be more than friends. Everyone is pressed for time, and when we put our entire lives into a larger perspective, clothes are far from fitting into our to-do lists and Google Calendar events. It is easy to believe that clothes do not matter in college. No one is watching; everyone is too busy to notice what you're wearing. The thing about clothes in college is that they do not matter to anyone but us.

Will the clothes we wear every day give us better grades? Or make us less stressed? Or even fix our existential crises? Of course not. At least, not directly. But the small detail of wearing something we like can make us feel a little happier with ourselves. Clothes should matter to us because what we choose to wear can make a big difference in how we feel about ourselves. They can be the reason why we wake up with a little more hope for the day. What we wear can put us in a better mood and make us walk with a little more confidence.

Since what we wear can change our moods and days, we should pay attention to what types of clothing spark that Marie Kondo kind of joy. But since everything is easier said than done, how do we start to enjoy the clothes we wear?

The first thing to understand is that the details are what matter. Little things about outfits can go a long way in making us love the clothes we already own. Here are some details to think about the next time you put together an outfit:

Cuffing Season

There is no way that there is money left over for tailoring in college. The good news is that you can cuff your pants and sleeves, and no one will ever know. Cuffing your sleeves can be the difference between a shirt that fits you perfectly, and a shirt that is almost right but never leaves your closet. This simple change will make your clothes look more fitted, allowing you to look more like an adult and less like a college student who just can't make it to a 9 AM class unless they're still wearing pajamas.

It's in the Jeans

Finding the right pair of jeans is a topic that has already been talked to death, but it's that important. With the right pair of jeans, any shirt works, any shoe matches, and all your dreams can come true. Take advantage of the high-waisted mom jean trend. They are the most comfortable style and are universally flattering. Low-waisted jeans are not made for mere mortals (unless you're among the brave, like Emily Ratajkowski)

The French Kiss– I Mean, Tuck

There is no better French tuck messiah than Queer Eye’s Tan France. He swears by the French tuck and so should you. The waist is the new window to the soul, and you can bring attention to it for an eye-catching look. Wearing a T-shirt and jeans? French tuck. Wearing an oversized sweater but don't want to drown in fabric? French tuck. French tuck it all, it will make your legs look longer instantly. It will give even the simplest outfit an extra dose of "I've thought hard about this look, trust me." A trick so effective and easy will never go out of style.

Socks and Shoes and Ankles, Oh My

There are endless little details that can make you more excited about the clothes you wear. Focus on one thing at a time. Put a little more thought into your shoes or socks or a shirt. Finding the details that you love about your clothes is a journey. It takes a little extra thought each day but in the end, it can lead you closer to your true style and raise your confidence to a level that may seem impossible now.

Strike Out,
