The Depression Diet
As we are quickly approaching the holidays, it should be considered that while this time can mean lots of cheer for some people, it can just easily mean lots of sneers to others. Since cuffing season doesn't always lead to happy vibes for everyone, it is a good idea to focus on mood boosters to lift your spirits during this time. Although family and relationships can be stressful for many, even Mr. Scrooge likes one thing about the holidays: the food! Here are a few suggestions that are scientifically proven to help pull you out of your depressive slump this year.
Of course, the one food group that everyone secretly hopes is on the list is carbs so that they can give themselves an excuse to have an extra plate of mashed potatoes or stuffing. However, these are not the types of carbs that are beneficial for you. Healthy carbs such as fruits, veggies, legumes, and whole grains can help to boost serotonin levels in your body to make you feel happier! So maybe instead of a second helping of sweet potato casserole, have some whole grains instead!
Another good food choice that can help to combat your seasonal sadness is protein. Sources of protein can give you energy and help you feel more alert and ready for whatever Thanksgiving dinner drama might throw at you. Whether you like turkey, ham, or even some Greek yogurt from home, find the protein option on the table that will properly fuel you!
While it's not shocking that some obvious healthy food groups help with mental health, there are also a few obscure food choices that should be on your radar. For example, walnuts! Walnuts are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids which are known to boost your mood. Another interesting food known to destroy depression is tomatoes. Many people with depression are shown to have low folate levels, but tomatoes contain folic acid to help balance out this problem! Lastly, apples are shown to regulate blood sugar levels and, in turn, stabilize your mood. Trying to work some of these foods into your daily diet is advantageous when it comes to combating depression.
As hard as it is to hear, there are also many foods that we consume daily that are worsening our mood. For example, foods that are high in trans fats, like fried foods, frosting, pizza dough, cookies, etc. are known for deepening depressed feelings. Along with that, foods with lots of sugar can cause your blood sugar to spike and crash, causing mood swings. If you are experiencing symptoms of depression and you are unsure as to why try to take a look at your diet. Are you eating things that are good for your brain or just what satisfies your late night cravings?
Don't get bogged down by seasonal sadness! Grab a bowl of walnuts and stay out of the cookie jar to help save yourself from the depression that your diet can ensue upon you.
