The 1975 Has Returned

The wait is finally over. Everyone’s favorite indie pop-rock band has announced the news that they will be releasing their newest studio album, Being Funny in a Foreign Language. Their last album, Notes on a Conditional Form, was released in 2020, making it two years since the band released any new music. Being Funny in a Foreign Language will be their fifth studio album, and fans are buzzing with excitement and anticipation for the release date on October 14th.

Since the release announcement, they have released four new songs, all conveying the classic essence of the band- soulful, upbeat, and unapologetically emo. The 1975 has been accredited with pushing boundaries within the music industry by transcending the typical limiting themselves to one genre. They shift and combine the sounds of alternative, indie, rock, punk, and pop into their music, creating an aura of a cloud-like, light, and airy feeling.

The band has managed to shake off the stereotypical boy band look, and instead give off edgy rocker vibes that attract and engage fans. Their unique sounds and aesthetic has been constantly evolving, keeping long-time fans intrigued while also appealing to a new crowd.

Fans now have access and have been sharing graphics of the newest album’s tracklist, which contains the four already released songs along with seven more unheard melodies. As always, the band’s opening song is self-titled, and will include the same lyrics as the previous four albums but with different backing music.

It was reported that there was speculation in the air about the band releasing a new album when lead singer Matty Healy “poked fun at the prospect of “making another ‘classic record’” back in August 2021.” They have been posting multiple aesthetically pleasing pictures to their Instagram page, teasing album covers, lyrics, and music video concepts.

Along with the making of this new album, the group is supposedly also working on a side project under their old band name Drive Like I Do, which is now separate from the current 1975 structure. In an article from The Forty-Five, when asked what the new album would sound like, the response read “Kinda like Springsteen? The first single, Part Of The Band, was much more pared-back, forgoing the maximalist sound of their first few albums.”

While featured artists are still unknown, there are rumors that the album could include collaborations with Phoebe Bridgers and FKA twigs, as they were some of the artists featured on the band’s last album. In preparation and to build the hype for the release, the band has done stunning live performances with the BBC, and eventually will be on Late Night shows in the U.S. to promote the new album.

The band presented their fifth album as their “new era,” and I think it is safe to say that we are all ready and here for it. This new album will be the epitome of this year’s fall. Bring on all the dark, deep, and audibly beautiful vibes.

Strike out,
