Talloween: Your Guide to Halloween in Tallahassee
As someone who loves fashion, Halloween is my favorite time of year. I love being able to dress up and I’ll accept any excuse to wear a costume. Halloween is an incredibly significant time of year for a college student in Tallahasee: a time for hard launches, barhopping, and overall unhinged debauchery. Since “Talloween” is a weeklong event here at FSU and FAMU, you can see how deep the holiday can become ingrained in my lifestyle. I love it when celebrities start to post their Halloween costumes. It’s like the kick-off of “Halloweek” and it gives me inspiration for my costumes. Kylie Jenner’s witch costume was iconic; I mean who still looks pretty when they’re green?
Since Talloween is an annual fashion event where people flood Instagram feeds with outfits they wouldn’t be able to wear any other time of year, I plan at least three costumes in advance. Of course, such preparedness is not a requirement, but since I love Halloween, I always try to think outside of the box by choosing a niche pop culture reference, TV show, or movie as my inspiration. Costumes allow for fun and creativity, so even if you don’t have the biggest budget or the desire to go “all-out”, you don’t need to go out and buy a full costume—you can style an outfit from things that are already your closet. There are so many different options for costumes and remember, there is no “right” way to dress up!
My little sister and I love to go to the Goodwill bins, and whenever we see a cute Halloween costume, we always make sure to grab it—regardless of the time of the year. We always like to be prepared, just in case one of our friends doesn’t have a costume for Halloween. I’m more of the type of girl to dress cute for Halloween, but I respect the people who wear funny costumes; It makes the holiday so much more fun for everyone. I especially enjoy when celebrities put in a lot of effort to make outrageous and jaw-dropping costumes, like when Heidi Klum dressed as a worm for her annual star-studded Halloween bash.
Another reason I look forward to Halloween is because there is such a range of variety when it comes to costumes. You can pick a character that looks like you or go for something bolder and different than your usual look. In my opinion, changing your hair color can be so fun and exhilarating; I began to love and appreciate my natural strawberry blonde hair after I saw myself dressed as Daphne from Scooby-Doo. My previous blonde hair washed me out, but I had a bleach obsession that overpowered my opinion of hair health. In my costume, I was able to see myself in a new light and a cute outfit helped build my confidence in the new look. It was the adrenaline rush of the century! Sometimes the illusion of becoming different characters allows the traits that you admire to rub off on you.
Now that I’m in college, Halloween is so much more fun. Costumes ranging from Kim Possible, Monster High characters, Avril Lavigne, Chucky, Prince Charming, Justin Bieber, bunnies, clowns, to nuns run rampant throughout Tallahassee as thousands of college students go to parties, frat-hop, and attend local bars in hopes of having the ultimate spooky night! After all, Halloween is the best time of year for shenanigans.
While Halloween is a fun time of year, always make sure to stay by your friends' sides and be safe. Make sure to take care of yourself, stay hydrated, and look out for yourself and the friends you’re with. After Halloween night, the best part about making it home safe is the post-night-out debrief in the morning!
