Styling Your Fall Looks According to Your Fall Watchlist

With the age-old passage of our beloved Halloween comes the shift to our go-to TV and movies that fill us with excitement for the holidays. As someone who has a “Fall Rewatch Roster,” which lists all of my seasonal comfort movies in preparation for their annual viewing, I am certainly not immune to getting into the fall spirit. However, unlike my favorite characters, I often make the mistake of dressing for colder, northeastern weather in hopes of pretending it currently isn’t 80 degrees in Tallahassee, Florida. Despite the occasional weather disparities, our go-to seasonal media serves as the ultimate style influence for the upcoming holidays.

Starting with genius that is the lovely and iconic writer Nora Ephron, Ephron’s repertoire of films follows the perfect style formula fitting to accompany a wholesome rom-com plotline fitting for even the most cynical of audiences. With classic hits such as When Harry Met Sally, You’ve Got Mail, and Sleepless in Seattle, Ephron creates the idyllic city landscape and sensible fashion fans know and love.

Featuring rich-colored knits, textural layering, and simple accessorizing, the looks in Ephron’s films provide the perfect capsule wardrobe inspiration. Main characters such as Sally Albright from When Harry Met Sally often utilize the same base pieces, which is a great place to start when styling. By adding a favorite handbag, tote, rings, or necklaces, you can easily elevate Sally’s iconic red sweater-black skirt-and-boots combo and make it your own.

For the committed binge-watcher, television shows such as Gilmore Girls or Gossip Girl also provide ample fall style inspo. From Lorelai Gilmore’s often-controversial outfits to Blair Waldorf’s talent for spicing up school uniforms, fans have countless hours of rewatching to choose their favorite looks to copy. Similar to how these outfits serves as crucial components in their characterization, you wardrobe can be used to reflect your personal tastes outside of just clothes. The broad setting and context of these shows can also bring new direction when sporting an outfit for a job or internship interview, outside of your classic school and downtime fits.

Your favorite shows and movies can always bring new creative life to a wardrobe that you felt was lacking. Because the media we love reflects ourselves, oftentimes the on-set styling can have some sort of subconscious influence on our personal style. Luckily, the classics remain classics for good reason – as they certainly live in our hearts forever.
