Serving Looks in Tennis Skirts
Within the last few weeks, there seems to be this resurgence of another classic 90’s piece, and of course, brought to you by the Gen Z of TikTok. Now, white tennis skirts are in Instagram feeds and magazine spreads everywhere. This trend can be further accredited to athletic wear designed by Nike and Lululemon. When shopping for one online, just about every version of the item is sold out or has limited sizing available, and trying to find them on eBay or Depop is also a struggle since sellers triple the original price.
This is understandable, though; white tennis skirts have an effortlessly clean and preppy look and when combined with comfortability – there is no going wrong with on this iconic look. Like all avant-garde fashion trends, a white tennis skirt can initially be a challenge to style outside of a sporty, athleisure essence. However, there is way more versatility than meets the eye when being thrown the challenge of this recent trend.
The Sweatshirt
Styling a sweatshirt with a tennis skirt is extremely popular at the moment and gives a school-girl persona to the outfit. Try tossing on a collared shirt underneath your favorite sweatshirt and pull out the collar so it shows. Pair with white sneakers and ankle socks, and accessorize with gold statement jewelry, small lens sunglasses, and a shoulder purse.
Here’s a tip: if your sweatshirt is a little bigger than you’d like, tuck the bottom of the sweatshirt into the band of your bra to make it shorter, or to give a cropped look.
The Oversized Tee
To create some contrast, pull out your favorite oversized tee for this style to give your tennis skirt and French tuck it into your tennis skirt perfect opposite. If you’re unfamiliar, tuck the tiniest bit of the shirt into the front of your skirt and let it slouch hang around the rest of your waist. Pair with some heavy jewelry and, of course, white sneakers and ankle socks. This look combined with a messy half-up half-down hairstyle gives off a sense of purposeful carelessness that brings the whole ensemble together.
The Sports Bar
This is the typical sporty girl look and a monochromatic vision for anyone who sees: white tennis skirt, white sports bra, white sneakers, white socks. It can be any color, but I love throwing on a navy cable knit sweater around my shoulders. Adding a cute pair of small sunglasses or acrylic hair clips to push back your hair elevates this look.
The Leather Jacket
This one is a bit harder to pull off, but it looks so amazing when you do. Take the white tennis skirt and throw on a black bandeau. Top that with a leather jacket, some black open-toed kitten heels, and some silver statement jewelry. Adding pitch-black sunglasses are always a good idea, too. The biggest sunglass trend in sunglasses right now is the rectangle silhouette which sets the tone for the outfit, even more. But, if that’s not your vibe, they make the silhouette in a rounded-out version, too.
The Crop Top
There are two ways to do this: with a cropped t-shirt or with a cropped button-up sweater. For the first idea, take any t-shirt of your choosing and crop it to be right above your belly button. Grabbing something from the kid’s section is sometimes a win, too! Style that with a pair of sneakers and colorful socks.
If you go with the Emma Chamberlain sweater, try to use one with a pop of color or distinctive pattern. Button the sweater only on the notch closest to your neck and let the rest stay open and . Underneath, wear a bandeau or tank top underneath. Kick on a pair of kitten heels or sneakers — the outfit looks stunning with either!
With all that being said, hopping on this trend is super easy – you may already have the items mentioned in your closet. Since most of these items are 90’s inspired, I would try snooping through your mother’s closet or stopping at some local thrift shops for some goodies that may accentuate the vibe of this throwback look a little better.
