Selective Health

that stuff is bad for you

these?

greens?

our canvases

caked in chia seeds,

slip down our necks as we laughed,

curing me,

wash it off gently, she says

my flush face finally feels fresh, I see

just a sip, she says

and pushes the drink to me

those are bad for you.

crumbs seep into my mouth as she speaks

and I light the petals two by two

no thanks ladies, juice cleanse for me tonight!

fresh flesh!

lettuce wrap!

they are not what they seem

green stems disguised as beams

the petals ignite, a sea of flames

tricks in light, merely mind games

the cool glass sat on the palm of my hand

my nimble fingers gripping the stem

once the cup is tipped,

the liquid slips

don’t drink that, they say

it’s bad for you.

I’ve had a rough day,

maybe I’ll have two

I’ve cared for myself,

my skin, my bones

I even reached for top shelf,

not some measly little clones

veggie buns and orange slice chokers

green olive martini floaters

cool cucumber glasses

to help us see past this,

our self-deprecating habits
