Alert the “Paparazzi!” We’ve received our first look at Lady Gaga in Todd Phillip’s Joker 2: Folie a Deux!
Lady Gaga began her career as a pop icon, but with her roles in House of Gucci and A Star is Born, which won her an Oscar for Best Actress, she quickly becomes a movie star reminiscent of old Hollywood. She is an icon who has it all in terms of artistic talent. Now Gaga is slated to appear as Harley Quinn in the next installment of the Joker series. Gaga sparked buzz around the film after posting an image on Valentine’s Day, depicting her aside her costar, Joaquin Phoenix, who is reprising his role as the Joker for the film’s sequel. The image captures Harley Quinn after a passionate kiss with the Joker. While the details of the film are still under wraps, it’s rumored to be a Bad Romance film depicting a tumultuous relationship between the two as they wreak havoc in Gotham. The film’s title, Folie a Deux, means “folly of two,” or a mental illness or delusion shared by two people, indicating a destructive relationship between the two leads.

The film is also set to be a musical, which differs from its original film. Music can enhance the emotional intensity of a film, and there is no doubt that Gaga, with both musical and acting talents, will be a star. Gaga has previously won Oscars due to her musical work in films. She previously wrote and performed music for the Oscar-winning tear-jerker A Star is Born, which was largely a success due to its emotional accompaniments. She’ll once again be working with Bradley Cooper, her former costar on A Star is Born, to produce Joker 2.
Lady Gaga is taking over the role formerly held by Margot Robbie, who played Harley Quinn in three films, including Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey. Robbie has spoken highly of Gaga as Harley Quinn, telling MTV News in 2022 that she thinks Gaga “will be incredible with it.” Robbie also remarked that she is proud to have created a role that can be passed from one great actress to another, something she noted does not often happen with female characters.

The film’s predecessor, Joker, received some negative reviews, but racked up over $1 billion at the box office, making it an overall success. With a star-studded cast for the sequel, which includes Robert De Niro and Brendan Gleeson, it’s likely Joker 2 will have a similar reception.
The film is set to release on October 4, 2024, exactly five years after the first. Unfortunately, this means we still have a while until we see Gaga in her glory on the big screen as Harley Quinn. Based on the first look and Gaga’s many talents, it will likely be worth the wait.
