Olivia Rodrigo’s Recent Style is Hitting All the Right Notes

It’s no secret that singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo has solidified her position as one of pop music’s newest it-girls following the release of two internationally praised albums. She recently has been making headlines in the fashion world, exuding effortless, cool-girl energy through a different creative outlet.

Rodrigo is not defined by one genre but instead presents an intertwined, multifaceted style. Her wardrobe is filled with pieces both old and new and maintains a unique flair–even when participating in the latest trends.

Fans associate her brand with the black, red and purple tones of “SOUR,” and, “GUTS–” a palette she seems to stick to in styling.

Her red carpet attire is, in simple terms, elegant. At the 2024 Venice Film Festival, Rodrigo appeared hand-in-hand at a premier for boyfriend Louis Partridge’s upcoming project. She donned a Rodarte black burnout velvet maxi dress with a silk flower pin and minimal black Jimmy Choos. That signature flash of red– present in her dark lip and manicure.

For this year’s Grammy Awards, she wore an embellished gown from the Versace Spring 1995 ready-to-wear collection. The contrast of blood-red beading against a white backdrop appeared to be a reference to her hit song, “Vampire,” which was up for three awards that night.

Her shoe rotation is consistent, opting for either a pair of Dr. Martens, Mary Janes or tall boots. Even before she catapulted into stardom, she could be found strolling in a pair of Dr. Martens’ oxfords or platforms in tandem with a mini dress or a pair of Levi’s. The choice of an edgier shoe and a more feminine dress or skirt visually encapsulates the teenage angst heard across Rodrigo’s discography and incorporates the punk rock and early 2000s fashion she draws inspiration from.

Her streetwear is applaudable as well, consisting of what most 20 year-old-girls have in their own closets, making for easily replicable girls' night out or date night inspiration.

Lately, she’s been pairing the popular Frye 14L Campus Boots with either a mini or maxi dress. When leaving her friend Tate McRae’s concert, paparazzi snapped a picture of Rodrigo in a Réalisation Par halter dress and Dr. Martens lace-up boots. For her GUTS World Tour after-party, she emerged in a sheer LBD with scallop trim, a red leather jacket and black moto boots.

She is also frequently spotted in a mini skirt paired with a vintage graphic tee. In Dec. 2023 she wore a vintage Blondie shirt for Saturday Night Live promotional videos and was seen in Aug. 2023 arriving at the BBC Studios in a 1968 Pat Benatar tee and black oval sunglasses.

Many of her iconic outfits incorporate second-hand fashion, including archival designer pieces and the occasional vintage Betsey Johnson dress.

The GUTS World Tour lookbook has also evolved from the SOUR days, with custom pieces from designers like Heather Picchiottino and Michael Schmidt Studios. A new Phantasy tank top with a cheeky phrase accompanies her in each city, and the Swarovski-embellished two-piece sets are reminiscent of some outfits seen on the SOUR Tour. While Rodrigo’s more grunge ensembles from her first tour have evolved into mature, simplistic looks, she still chooses to perform in her trademark Jadon Platform Boots by Dr. Martens.

In both worlds of music and fashion, Olivia Rodrigo is continuing to stun audiences and inspire a new generation of teenagers looking to embrace their inner “all-american bitch.”
