Miu Miu Went Micro

This spring, our high fashion favorites are demanding more skin. As the days get longer, the skirts get shorter. Miu Miu and many other brands have embraced leg by releasing their almost intimidatingly short skirts, coining the term “micro mini skirt.” This miniskirt is breaking the internet, which, in turn, made its place as a statement for many issues- good and bad. This influenced fashion moguls to indulge in the trend and offer their best versions—not without the usual love/hate banter from the rest of the fashion world.

Miu Miu broke the internet when they released their super-short skirt in their spring 2022 fashion show last October. Hailey Bieber was one of the first to pose in the piece for their social media debut. People went crazy, either criticizing the measurements or going to great lengths to get their own, as Miu Miu has been sold out of theirs for weeks. The waistline is getting a trim to being ultra-low rise, not only giving more leg but more torso, too. The people who love the piece rave about how the measurements transform their body; it creates a great curvature of the torso, while simultaneously showing off the lower limbs, making every pair of legs look long and ready for summer.

It is comparable to the classic Daisy Dukes we see every June and July: short and low. Those who hate it criticized its length. Many believe that skirts are meant to show innocence and be “lady-like” pieces of clothing. They call the skirt skimpy, relating it to a sexy schoolgirl look. While it would probably not be worn in the office or the classroom, it is a statement piece, head-turning and jaw-dropping—the exact reaction high fashion brands are after.

We saw evidence that anyone can rock the thigh-high exposure. Nicole Kidman posed in her micro on the cover of Vanity Fair, wearing the equally cropped top to match, rejecting ageism in fashion by proving even older women can pull off such a “promiscuous” item. Paloma Elsesser posed in the skirt, showing that it flatters every body type.

Size is not a limit, and should not be a measurement of beauty. Vin Ho, a male model, also sported the skirt in a recent Instagram post, wearing the same outfit the model did when Miu Miu first released the skirt on the runway. Rejecting sexism, proving that fashion is gender fluid. The skirt grabbed attention and quickly became a statement for empowerment across important social issues. While the Cher and Dionne from Clueless schoolgirl skirt got a trim, it does not change its admirability. The pleaded look may be modified to create new and innovative changes, but it will always be a staple no matter the modification. This statement piece is important to our ever-evolving fashion world and the social challenges it faces.
