Metallic is the new black, according to Rick Owens

The Lord of Darkness has once again come to claim his throne, this time with a fun twist. Rick Owens, American-born, Paris-based fashion designer, earned the nickname “lord of darkness” from the dark and grungy energy he produces in his collections. The color of the season is always black, of course. However, Owens threw a little twist in his cult favorite looks with his new Women FW 23 collection. This year, metallic is the new black.

The FW23 collection is named “Luxor,” inspired by the Egyptian city. Bold silhouettes and exaggerated proportions show the inspiration of theatrics and war coming from the city’s rich history.

The show took place on a minimalist stage, a simple black runway with lights and fog billowing from under the models. This season, puffer jackets are all the rage. Models wore oversized puffer jackets that wrapped their bodies in unique ways that jackets usually don’t fit. Owens also debuted new boots to accompany these jackets—the puffer boot!

These jackets came in typical Rick owns black, but the metallics stole the show. Models wearing bright pink, green, silver, and brown metallics certainly stood out from the rest of the collection. The metallics also came to life on models wearing capes and dresses with long trains and exaggerated silhouettes. The bold shoulder looks for women are making a comeback this FW season, as many models sported shoulder pads or extensions of their shoulders coming from their clothing.

In addition to introducing us to some new material, Owens paid homage to his famous “kiss heels.” Whether classic or overdone, most models wore these heels, and not much about them has changed.

Layering is also a staple in this collection. Models wore jackets on top of sweaters on top of skirts, and knee-high boots on this runway, giving a huge presence and dimension to the looks.

Black never seems to go out of style, at least according to Rick Owens. It makes you wonder how often you can reinvent the color black before it gets stale. Needless to say, soft silhouettes and color schemes are NOT the trends for this FW 23, so break out your big leather boots and buy the largest puffer jacket you can find; winter is coming.
