Looking at the Crochet Craze

It seems like nearly everyone is learning to crochet. Your aunt posted a new blanket she crocheted on Facebook, your friend brought her crochet needle for your road trip, and there’s even a Crochet Club at FSU! Crocheting has rapidly gained traction as a hobby and has become one of the most popular activities amongst those who craft. While crocheting isn’t a new phenomenon, it’s impossible to deny the exponential growth it has undergone within the last few years. So, what caused the sudden interest?

The lockdown left many of us with more free time than we were used to. Suddenly, our usual pastimes weren’t fulfilling enough to last us through endless hours of isolation. Naturally, we picked up new hobbies. Whipped coffee and Cloe Ting workout routines come to mind when reflecting on our time at home; however, many other activities also gained traction, with crochet remembered as a prevailing COVID craft.

The accessibility of crochet has contributed to its enduring popularity from the pandemic until now. Compared to other crafts, crochet doesn’t require expensive equipment and its required materials are conveniently stocked at your nearest craft supply store. There also isn’t too much of a learning curve. Sure, getting the hang of it takes a little practice and dedication, but it’s a relatively simple skill to acquire and improve.

Nearly anything you can think of can be crocheted. A small blanket, a hat, or a bag can all be made with a crochet needle. It’s easy to find a simple design that interests you to get started. You can buy prepackaged kits with step-by-step instructions to crochet small items, like a stuffed animal. These products are designed with beginners in mind and provide everything you need for the project. It’s a super simple way to get started and gives you the foundation to advance to more complex designs.

Crocheting has stayed relevant due to the community it has fostered. Crochet has a significant social media presence. Many people sell their unique creations online, while others post to share what they have made. The crochet community is supportive and encouraging, inspiring the creativity of others. Those who are more experienced want to see novices improve and offer helpful tips. The online presence generates interest in the hobby and keeps the community thriving, allowing crochet to remain relevant even after the pandemic.

Crochet as an art form has grown over the past few years. Items as elaborate as gowns and intricate costumes are made by experts in the craft. It’s also becoming common to see people with a crochet bag or skirt, possibly one they made themselves. It’s safe to say that crochet isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Even if you feel you’re behind on the trend, remember it’s never too late to gain a new skill! Pick up a needle and start crocheting; you may be surprised by how much you enjoy it.

Strike Out,
