Is Drunk Elephant Really Worth the Hype?

Drunk Elephant, no, is not a new drinking game, but rather a skincare company that has gone viral over the past few months and is considered by many to be a must-have in your skincare routine. However, as with every trending brand, sometimes we mindlessly purchase products before knowing if we truly want or need them, simply because it’s trending. Naturally, this brand’s newfound popularity poses the question: Is Drunk Elephant really worth the hype?

Tiffany Masterson, the creator of the company, launched the brand in 2013, yet through the power of social media, the brand quickly began rising to fame with the “clean girl” trend in late 2021. The “clean girl” aesthetic goal is to look fresh-faced and youthful; what better way to do this than through Drunk Elephants skincare products that focus on clean formulations, free of silicones, essential oils, chemical sunscreens, SLS, alcohols, and fragrances/dyes.

The most popular Drunk Elephant product that has been consistently trending on social media is the Protini Polypeptide Firming Moisturizer and yes, it is hyped for a reason. The moisturizer uses a pump, so the product isn’t exposed to the air with every use—making the product more hygienic as your fingers aren’t digging into the bottle for every use. The consistency of the moisturizer leans more towards the gel side which hydrates the skin for longer than typical moisturizers. It’s lightweight enough for oily skin yet still hydrating enough for dry skin. Personally, it works wonders on my combination skin. The product will leave your face plump and firm with the signal peptides used to help bind the moisture to your skin.

That being said, the product is $68 and, although the moisturizer is great, if you’re not willing to pay for the pricey product, TikTok is always quick to find a dupe. Bubble is a skincare brand that was launched in 2020 that is much more affordable. Their product, Slam Dunk, is considered a Protini Moisturizer dupe, and although it doesn’t have the same ingredients as DE’s moisturizer, it contains aloe leaf juice and hoya lacunosa flower extract that will hydrate and calm the skin. With cute packaging and a $16 price tag, the Bubble moisturizer can serve as a more affordable substitute for the Drunk Elephant product. This goes for several of their other products, for example, their Bronzing Drops. TikTok has already found a dupe with the Bondi Sands Bronze Lights, and there are a lot more where that came from.

Drunk Elephant is a great brand with tons of different serums, moisturizers, drops, and high-quality skin care products, yet their products are not necessarily the most affordable. While I wouldn’t say their products are an absolute must-have, you can decide if their products are right for you.

Strike Out,
