Inside Scoop: Please Don't Kill Me Mr. Ghost Face, I Wanna Be in the Sequel!

We like to be scared, especially when Halloween is just around the corner. Some people may travel to a haunted house to fulfill their chilling desires, while others (like myself) will elect to watch a horror movie. Here’s the thing, I think if you don’t watch at least one slasher movie, you aren’t getting into the full bloody gore filled spirit of Halloween.

1. Scream

The classic comedic trope of horror movies. Scream set the scene as an influential horror movie that created a funny yet somehow frightening movie. Many would argue Scream never needed to break out into further sequels, but as many horror franchises do, they set forth in creating not 1, 2, 3, 4, but 5 sequels, in fact with a 6th being released in March of 2023. Interestingly enough the 6th movie will serve as a continuation of the 5th film. The star of Scream 2022 revealed this saying, “No, it's not [a big-time jump] at all. It's almost directly after the last one. Basically, the amount of time that has passed between one movie and the other is the amount of time that has passed in Scream time." The sequels aren’t necessarily bad, in fact they include the brutal kills, gory scenes, and clever commentary filled with iconic sayings. I do think some of the franchise sequels are better than others, but that goes for any sequel filled movie. Scream does well by reusing the original idea over and over again with new killers following fresh story plot. It is a consistent franchise, in which they are able to create new stories while keeping the movies on trend. Nevertheless, the original Scream will always stay the most iconic for its groundbreaking twist in the slasher genre category.

2. Halloween

Halloween is a legacy horror franchise. How many movies do you think this film series includes? Don’t look it up, guess. Thirteen movies. Can you believe that? Now again, like Scream, the original Halloween movie was pure genius. It was a masked serial killer who murders people in fictional town. Unlike Scream, Michael Myers is not a new killer each movie, but the same killer who somehow seems to still be alive and coming back to be everyone’s nightmare. Recently, Halloween Ends was released and as the directors ‘promised’ the story came to an ‘end’. I won’t delve any deeper into that statement too much to not give any spoilers, but all I want to say is the iconic slasher series doesn’t seem like an end to me. In fact, this movie could have alluded to the start of a whole new story, but you will need to watch to understand.

3. Friday the 13th

Okay, come on, you had to know I would mention this movie. Friday the 13th, much like Halloween, is just too legendary to not delve into. Friday the 13th has plenty of sequels, twelve to be exact. This is the only film franchise I would suggest is better in number in which they are interesting as a whole than one individual movie. It has been 13 years since the last Jason slasher murder scene, so I would say it is well overdue for a new sequel. Well, it has been hinted that a new movie will come out next year sometime around August, which is perfect to get yourself thinking and ready for Halloween. Apparently, the reason we have been waiting so long for a new movie is some sort of legal issues between the original film write and its producer over rights of property. Whatever, all I know is we need Jason’s eerie presence back on the big scene as it would seem unfitting for everyone else to be coming with sequels and Jason sitting in the sidelines. There is just something about this franchise that sucks you into the movie and continuously makes you want to keep watching more.

4. The Terrifier

So, this isn’t an Iconic franchise like the ones I have discussed above, but it seems to do extremely well when it hits the box office. The Terrifier is as it sounds- terrifying. The original movie was released in 2016 as a low budget, no stars, killer clown slasher film. So, how did this low budget movie lead to a sequel? Box-office success. The ultraviolent sequel was made with a 250,000-dollar budget, and the kicker is they have grossed 5.2 million dollars. Yeah, that’s a massive profit. I personally have watched Terrifier 2 in theaters and will say yes it was filled with gore, blood, and an absolutely terrifyingly creepy clown, but I expected way more from the movie. If you have kept up with the news at all, Terrifier 2 has been reported to have left viewers throwing up, passing out, and simply walking out of the movie due to violent killings. Now, I can somewhat understand why people may have been utterly scared after certain scenes, but a majority of the movie was unrealistic in which the murdered characters kept coming back to life. No, it wasn’t after a stab wound, it was after their bodies were left completely destroyed that characters would somehow keep coming back alive repeatedly. This led to moaning and groaning from my fellow audience members and bursts of laughter from the ridiculous scenes the movie produced. If I am being honest, this was not a scary movie for me. Just another slasher movie that has somehow entrapped people in paying to watch this movie.
