I Bought it on Depop

I bought it on Depop…” has a certain ring to it. It’s like the bragging rights of second-hand fashion. A superiority to gatekeeping that is genuine but still exclusive in its own way. When you buy something on Depop, you are not only expanding your wardrobe. You are contributing to a new cultural ecosystem for generations to come. You will find yourself down a rabbit hole of vintage jeans and new listings before you can even text your mom back.

You are no longer addicted to shopping. You are addicted to Depop, the new social media.

From handmade apparel to one-of-a-kind vintage finds, Depop has taken the Gen-Z fashion scene to a new level. Although famous platforms like Poshmark have made second-hand fashion accessible, Depop has revolutionized the combination of thrifting and aesthetics. There is no longer an emphasis on the physicality of clothing like its condition or price, rather, the presentation and marketing tactics are taken into account when posted. Depop users are most successful when their page mirrors your favorite Instagram influencer. They are not just sellers, but content creators, artists, marketing strategists, and your best friend all at once.

In an era that celebrates the girl boss in all of us, the age of influencing has transitioned from TikTok and Instagram to a new culture that surrounds unique fashion finds. Gen-Z has not just progressed from one app to the next like most cases of societal metamorphosis. We have communally and successfully generated a new attitude to the fashion industry. Depop is everything that fashion is becoming. Trendy, but distinctive. Homemade, but high-end. It has omitted the exclusivity of luxury goods and replaced it with a desire for uncommon and unknown brands. It is the rebirth of the y2k era, but with a new appreciation for vintage and quirk. While millennials wait years for an Hermes appointment, Gen-Z avidly searches the Depop app for low-rise jeans and thrifted handbags.

Scrolling through Depop is just like any other social media app, but what makes it so addicting is the ability to take what you see and buy it within seconds. The instant gratification of online shopping has never been more attainable. It is a perfectly curated selection of your favorite styles and brands all in one app. It is a marketplace that continues to grow and change with fashion, finding value in clout instead of currency. It allows our generation to become business owners, CEOs of real merchandise, and creatives all at the same time.

So the next time you say “I bought it on Depop”, your superiority complex is valid. You are a part of the entrepreneurial, immersive community that our generation has created. You are the drama.

Strike out,
