How to train your docs

Docs are mans’ best friend or something like that. And like any other beloved pet, we have to train them to behave.

If you have had a pair of Dr. Martens, you know exactly what I’m talking about. The first few wears are nothing but pure agony until they are broken in. As an avid Dr. Martens wearer, I’ve learned a thing or two because I’ve seen a thing or two. Or six—that’s how many pairs of these babies I’ve been through. Breaking in your new Dr. Martens doesn’t have to be hard. These are a few of my favorite tricks, from a somewhat professional Doc Trainer.

Give Your Docs Lots Of Belly Rubs:

It’s common knowledge that your furry friends love a good belly rub, so why wouldn’t your Dr. Martens?

On the official Dr. Martens website, the famous brand encourages you to give your new pair a good rub, or massage to break them in faster. Giving your new docs a massage will simulate your feet breaking them in, saving yourself the footwork.

Walk Your Docs Multiple Time A Day:

Obviously, the best way to get genuine wear on your Dr. Martens is to keep walking around in them. Even if it’s just a few quick laps around the neighborhood.

According to The Dog People, a dog needs 30 minutes to two hours of exercise a day. It shouldn’t be any different when trying to soften the leather of your shoes.

Train With Water:

When your docs are bad, spray them with a little water.

Water makes leather more flexible. So reprimanding your new pair with water may make your new pair adjust to your feet quicker.

The Hairdryer Helper:

Hair. Heels. Docs. They are one and the same when it’s a hairdryer and a pair of brand-new Dr. Martens. Who would have thought that your after-shower saving grace could help resize your shoes?

The heat from the hairdryer will remold the shoe to better fit your foot, depending on where you apply the heat. Keep your foot in the heated shoe until it feels cool to keep the shoe from shrinking back to its original form.

With time, your docs will listen to you. The more attention you give them, the faster they will adjust to your feet.
