How to Achieve Fall Fashion in Florida

Those of us who have been living in Florida for a while know that the state only experiences two seasons. The temperature either falls under “really hot” or “it’s bearable outside.” Lucky for us, Tallahassee provides us with a few "sweater weather" days a year, and we can finally pull our winter coats out from the depths of our closets. Most days are hot, humid, and not at all in the spirit of fall.

First, let's talk about colors. Ditch your light-wash jeans and replace them with a darker-toned pair of bottoms. Not only is black denim a closet staple, but it fits the seasonal trends. Incorporate hues of red, orange, and yellow to add a pop of color that contrasts deep-toned bottoms. If warm tones aren't your forte, I have good news! Try navy blue or olive-toned pieces, which pair well with nearly anything.

By now, we all know that animal print is rising in the ranks. From faux snakeskin boots to leopard print skirts, anyone can find a new favorite piece to wear this fall and experiment with patterns while doing so!

One of my favorite pairings is a leopard skirt with a dark graphic tee and a pair of chunky black boots! This is a perfect way to stay trendy while still maintaining that essential sense of comfort.

I cannot stress the importance of layering enough. Rather than reaching for your typical, chunky-knit sweater, I suggest throwing together a t-shirt paired with a black denim jacket. That way, you avoid overheating. It is Florida, after all. Even wearing a long-sleeve flannel with a baggy tee on top would be eye-catching and not too sweat-inducing. I think it is time we come to terms with the fact that Floridians were not made to wear Sherpa coats.

Do not be afraid to re-wear your favorite trendy summer items; you can always accessorize to include that fall feeling we all know and love. Next time you go on your monthly online shopping spree, take a look at the timeless straw handbags. Although some may deem that item as being "too summery", I say make it your own by tying a plum-toned scarf along with the straps. Not only is this a cute idea to bring your idea together with affordable pieces, but you are doing your part to help the planet by not overbuying clothing.

While puffer jackets, thick scarves, and chunky knit sweaters are the true essence of autumn, they just aren’t realistic in our home state. I’m sure we all have splurged on an overpriced coat that resides in our closet for 364 days of the year, and the one day we take it out, we wished we hadn’t because it got too hot. There are ways to achieve fall looks in Florida without the heavy clothes, just remember to think creatively!
