How Princess Diana Influenced Fashion
When you think of Princess Diana, perhaps the first image that comes to mind is her iconic ivory taffeta wedding gown that she wore when she married Prince Charles. Or the stunning black "revenge" dress which she wore soon after Charles admitted to his unfaithfulness. Or any of the other remarkable evening gowns that she so effortlessly pulled off, sparkling like a diamond in the rough. Whichever it may be, there is no doubt that Diana was and still is a fashion icon that inspires so many, including me.
My obsession with Princess Diana’s sense of style began when I watched season four of The Crown on Netflix. Focused almost entirely on the beginning of Diana’s relationship with the royal family, The Crown showed how she expressed herself through fashion. I scrolled through Pinterest for what seemed like hours, gazing at photos of Diana's outfits and ultimately falling in love with them. Now, I always turn to her when I'm out of ideas. Whenever I need inspiration, I know I can always count on the fashion icon herself. She pulled off dresses that I never would have dreamed could be a “look”, and when paired with her classic jewelry and tiaras, it is no surprise that she is celebrated for her outstanding taste.
Typically, I avoid restricting myself to one category of style, for fashion is an ever-changing industry. However, if I were to define my current taste in clothing, I would find myself somewhere between ultra-casual and athleisure. Exercise or not, Lululemon is my go-to for leggings and shirts. If I'm wearing a pair of sweatpants and a tank top, you better believe I'm one happy girl. It honestly keeps everything extremely comfortable while making me feel confident. The comfy athletic vibe that I so often go for has a direct correlation with one of Diana’s most famous outfits: the bike shorts and crewneck sweatshirt combo.
An 80s and 90s classic, Diana made this look popular by wearing it whenever she was out and about. Once again, the fashion cycle has repeated itself, and this look has made its way back to popular retail outlets. Personally, I am a firm supporter of the biker short, and they are slowly but surely taking over my wardrobe since I wear them at least twice a week. When paired with an oversized sweatshirt, a pair of chunky white sneakers, and some jewelry, it makes starting my day that much easier.
Diana's pairing of mom jeans, a white button-down or t-shirt, and a blazer is another crowd favorite. Her spin on classic casual can be seen on countless celebrities today.
Princess Diana’s wardrobe is proof that fashion always comes full circle. Whether we like it or not, trends are bound to repeat themselves. Pieces that we once thought to be hideous might be in all of our closets next month. Diana developed the blueprint for a timeless style, and many people, including myself, will forever turn to the people’s princess for their next appearance.
