Homecoming: Theophilio’s SS23 Homage Collection
Three words to describe this collection: crazy, sexy, and cool. Edvin Thompson has made his hometown, Kingston, Jamaica, proud by delivering some of the most sultry yet patriotic looks of New York Fashion Week (NYFW). In the newest Theophilio SS23 Homage collection, Thompson paid respect to his Jamaican and American heritage through effortless and nostalgic Carnival ensembles catering to his roots, accompanied by a touch of inspiration from the U.S. cities he lived in, such as New York, Atlanta, and New Jersey.
His designs have been all over editorial shoots and worn by celebrities like Keke Palmer and Summer Walker. While already the 2021 CFDA Winner for American Emerging Designer of the Year, all of Thompson’s clothing continues to exhibit his creative range in providing genderless pieces that exude sex appeal. Here are some looks that convinced me he deserves the title of Homecoming King.
In his collection, Thompson revamps tourist wear as he shares a cropped fit-tied tee illustrating his inspiration for New York’s souvenir culture by paying respect to the iconic I <3 NYC t-shirts. A purchase many of us have fallen victim to making every time we step foot in the notorious city. The top was paired with biker-style leather pants, brand-name boxers, and black square-toed boots. Altogether, this ensemble embodies true city-boy energy.
Caught a case of Saturday Night Fever? This flawless cream jacket with a glittery shirt and a “TP” emblem layered overtakes you back in time while keeping up with current trends. The top was enhanced by a matching miniskirt and mustard yellow purse. This look gives versatility a new name while being perfect for a night on the town or dinner on a tropical vacation.
Strutting down the runway, this shiny snakeskin outfit incorporates both the boldness of the city and the exotic essence of Jamaica’s landscape. Thompson says he gained much inspiration from his parent’s wedding and the inclusivity of looks that both men and women could equally pull off. Each piece is highly wearable and could all be shown off on its own. The flared snake pants and boots give off a 1970s New York vibe that is utterly timeless.
Bringing honor to the brand’s New York presence, this look was my favorite of the sequence graphic pieces. The dress’s print was motivated by graffiti art, as sayings like “TP,” Family Tings, and New York shrouded its entire bodice. Thompson’s unique design perception curated a substantial balance of sexy, regality, and heritage.
Jamaican Dem Girls: This astonishing look portrayed the true essence of the island that gave life to Thompson. The captivating headpiece is embellished with colorful, vibrant feathers. Not to mention the heavy, convoluted beading and cowrie shells that drape across the face. All meshed with the sexiest snake print two-piece swimsuit. The extravagant outfit pays respect to the island’s rich musical and cultural history with high-energy parades and glamorous costumes. It truly serves as an immediate salute to Jamaica’s iconic Carnival scene.
Edvin Thompson once again shows how malleable his creative outlook is—one that continuously keeps us at the edge of our seats every season.
