History Can Repeat itself this year for the 2024 Met Gala
As this May is approaching, let’s discuss a Met Gala theme for 2024. Each celebrity that attends the Gala has their own style that they wish to honor, but cannot always express. Stylists have made a huge impact on artists, helping them to achieve their vision within the theme. However, the artists themselves don’t always get to choose how to express themselves on the carpet. In the Fashion world, history is important, as style has progressed through many different decades. So, to portray this and give celebrities creative freedom, this year’s Met Gala theme should be “Let History Repeat Itself,” and every celebrity should be able to choose a decade or time period they resonate with the most.
From Medieval times to the 2000s, artists will have the ability and freedom to choose their own decade or era for their outfits. The carpet will be filled with important history from the fashion world. For instance, in an interview for Elle Australia Lucy Cocoran spoke to stylist for the stars Jordan Foster about celebrity input at the Met Gala. Foster stated, "A celebrity can be as involved or uninvolved as they want in choosing and designing their Met Gala looks… Celebrities, for the most part though, hire stylists to spearhead the project and put their trust in them. It's usually the stylist who is liaising with the designer or brands and guiding the client through the process.” With the artist being given a choice in the clothing the style can become more personal. Picking a decade or era of history at the Met Gala would show appreciation for all of fashion’s history. Fans watching at home will be able to resonate with the artist more and connect with their sense of style. It is known that every artist has trust in their stylist, but it would be a good change to see the trust they hold within themselves.
Celebrities love to pay tribute to their own heritage and culture. For example, Tiffany Haddish wore an Eritrean princess gown to honor her father's heritage at the 2018 Academy Awards. She confidently and comfortably wore a white corset gown with black and gold detailing and a matching velvet jacket. The authentic princess dress was her way of expressing her culture. In the Insider article, “7 Times Celebrities Paid Tribute to Their Heritage on the Red Carpet”, states “She told Seacrest: "My father passed away this year and he's from Eritrea, and he said one day you're gonna end up at the Oscars and when you go you're going to have to honor your people.". When celebrities honor their own culture and heritage, fashion has a deeper meaning. If we all could all see what decade our favorite artist connects with the most, we can have more meaning in fashion as well.
