Guts Tour: What Are We Wearing?

Concert culture is a whole different entity, separate from all others. The dedication fans have to their favorite artists goes beyond, spending hours of hard work and labor to afford seeing them live. Not only that, but some of these fans spend their free time single-handedly recreating the exact outfits their idol has worn. The outfit and the actual act of watching the show are the top moments of being at a concert.

Olivia Rodrigo kicked off her GUTS world tour on February 23rd in Palm Springs, California with a boom. She surprised fans with a floating crescent moon stage and performed an unreleased track, titled “Obsessed.” This tour and each tour stop date in particular are important. In each city, Rodrigo donates a portion of ticket sales to community-based nonprofits that support women’s reproductive health in the area with her program Fund 4 Good

For the die-hard fans, outfit recreation is the way to go. On the left, is a replica of Rodrigo’s “good for you” outfit from her debut album Sour, establishing the fan as a long-time supporter. In 2022, Rodrigo released a documentary titled Driving Home 2 U, where she explores what it is like being a young woman on the rise in the industry. On the right, a fan recreated the outfit Rodrigo wore to the event! This is personally one of my favorite Olivia looks, as it is the perfect balance between girly, yet edgy. .

If you are looking for practicality, then a simple concert shirt will do the trick! You can dress up a big shirt with a pair of interesting tights and some big boots. Not only is this simple and easy, but it is clothing that you will re-wear! You will not have to feel bad about spending even more money on clothing after travel costs, the tickets, and buying even more merch.

Fans did not only limit themselves to recreation or merch, but decided to let their style shine through in their outfits. These are my personal favorite kind of concert outfits that lean more into the overall vibe of the artist and their music. This is a good space for creativity with outfits, and many try to see how many subtle references to the music or star they can tie in. For example, some fans wore the red, heart-shaped necklace from the “bad idea, right?” music video, or the words “All American” written across their t-shirt, which is a direct call back to “all-american bitch”.

I was able to attend the tour in Orlando on March 5th and I had a blast. I bought the tickets in secret back when presale opened and surprised my high school friend, Frida, with tickets as an early birthday gift. Olivia is known for the color purple, which happens to be Frida’s favorite color. Recently, Olivia has been playing around with accents of red, which is my favorite color. Of course, our outfits would resemble that, and I think it is a pretty cool invisible string moment.

I love concerts, and I love fashion. The way that one artist and their music can cultivate an entire style is insane, but it also is a demonstration of community. I enjoy walking into a venue and seeing all the amazing outfits people spent time putting together. At my show, a pair of friends came up to Frida and me and gave us handmade bracelets, just because they liked our outfits. It is captivating to see the level of genuine connections made from one silly little outfit I put together.
