Going to a Party School When You Don’t Party

Party culture has quickly taken over a multitude of colleges and universities around the world, and FAU is one of them. For many students, the chance to party means a chance to let loose with friends and break a few rules. But there are plenty of people who don’t have the same experience when it comes to going out on the town.

Almost every night of the week, students will walk past dressed up to go out, and others in their pajamas ready to go to bed. Party culture has become so popular for FAU students that it is hard for people to see it as anything but a party school.

For those who don’t find joy in going out, the constant dramatics of frat parties, the Fort Lauderdale strip, and local bars can create the idea that they're not doing it right. For some, this may even cause a sense of FOMO.

Tailgates before football games are what a lot of students would classify as an “essential” part of the FAU experience. However, they are just another party scene full of drinking and dancing to loud music between sweaty crowds. The hype behind attending these events can encourage the feeling of a lack of involvement because it’s become such a large part of FAU culture.

Society as a whole has perpetuated this idea that partying is what you should be doing when you are young and figuring yourself out. While that may be true for some people, those who don’t feel that way are often judged and made out to be “boring.” Choosing to stay in, going to bed early, or studying have become things that are described as “grandma” activities.

It’s so common to hear people say they don’t have anything to do simply because no parties or club events are happening. In reality, there are a number of on-campus events and opportunities for students to socialize with friends without the undesirable party scene. These events often get overlooked because they are dry events put on by campus organizations, but they are a way for people to feel more involved with FAU if tailgates aren’t their thing.

Over the years, FAU’s reputation has changed. People often overlook all that it has to offer and focus on what fraternity is throwing a party, or which club everyone is going to. Hundreds of clubs, organizations, events, and so much more are just waiting for people to stop by and enjoy what they have to offer. Not only are there constant happenings on campus, but there are so many ways to enjoy the area if nightlife doesn’t fill your cup.

FAU is more than just a party school. Whether introverted, extroverted, or a little bit of both, you can still have a worthwhile college experience no matter what you enjoy.
