Finding Peace Amidst The “Winter Scaries”

We’re all familiar with those uncomfortable feelings of dread and anxiety that creep in the night before a workweek starts, known as the “Sunday Scaries.” When winter rolls around, similar emotions, often referred to as the “Winter Scaries,” can appear and last all season long. It’s that time of the year where the weather gets colder, days get shorter, and the clouds seem never to disappear entirely. Don’t get me wrong, the holidays are exciting, but I know the season can also be overwhelming for many people, including myself. Luckily there are some ways you can combat the “Winter Scaries” to find peace of mind and boost your mood all season long.

1. Get some fresh air

Getting fresh air might seem pretty self-explanatory, but sometimes it can be hard to get yourself outside. It’s always good to remind yourself to get out and enjoy the fresh air every single day. There are many ways to enjoy the outdoors, such as taking long walks, riding a bike, or even sitting outside for just a couple of minutes. Soaking up the sunshine even in the winter is essential for your well-being.

2. Incorporate bright colors into your wardrobe

Trust me, I love an all-black winter fit, but picking a pop of color over a neutral every once and a while makes a huge difference. It may sound silly, but honestly, it works. I have a neon pink sweater that I cling to during the winter months. Its bright color adds pep to my step and makes me feel happier on the days I wear it. Neon in the winter is also an exciting fashion statement that can be fun to experiment with different vibes. Regardless of how you dress in the winter, incorporating bright colors will surely lift your spirits.

3. Seek opportunities to socialize

Finding time to hang out with your friends and family will drastically improve your mood during the lonely winter months. Again there are many ways to hang out with others, such as enjoying the holiday festivities, grabbing a coffee, shopping, or just sitting down and chatting. Having a well-established support system can be highly beneficial when you start to feel lonely and anxious. It can be so easy to isolate yourself during the winter when the chilly weather tries to keep you inside, but those personal connections will keep the “Winter Scaries” at bay.

4. Try something new

Personally, this is my favorite way to combat the “Winter Scaries.” Trying out a new hobby or learning something new is an excellent opportunity to give yourself a sense of accomplishment while keeping you active. Doing whatever you can to get out and about will stop you from spending the days inside. More power to you if you try something new that involves being outside and being around other people. Chose something you’ve always wanted to learn, and you might end up loving it!

Whenever you feel the “Winter Scaries” approaching, just remember you’re not alone in these emotions. I know it can get tricky when the weather gets cold and gloomy, but there are many ways to navigate these feelings. The most important thing you can do is stay connected with your loved ones and take care of yourself the best you can! Eventually, the cold weather will pass, and so will your “Winter Scaries!”
