Family Ties: My Take on the Latest Episode of The Kardashians

The Kardashian family has done it again, taking the world of reality television by storm and sending social media into a frenzy of commentary, hot takes, and predictions. Following the conclusion of Keeping up with the Kardashians in 2021 after an impressive twenty seasons, fans found comfort in their upcoming Hulu series. As someone who watched KUWTK from the very start, my expectations were high. Thankfully, The Kardashians premiere, Burn Them All to the F*****g Ground, did not disappoint. While I realize this is old news, and nearly every reality television fanatic already watched the first five episodes, I wanted to share my perspective regarding the events from last week. Better late than never, right?
The fifth episode, Who is Kim K?, offers a glimpse into Kim’s thought process as she navigates the obstacles of divorce, the baby bar exam, and her personal style. While she keeps her comments regarding the tension between her and Kanye West at a minimum, Kim made it clear that she was determined to learn to style herself. With that said, I’m looking forward to seeing what the world of fashion has in store for her.
Although the episode’s title is indicative of a narrative centered around Kim, I found that Scott Disick managed to take the spotlight. Following Kourtney’s engagement to Travis Barker, it was made clear that Scott felt ostracized from the rest of the family.
Enter Kris Jenner.

The iconic mom-ager invites Disick to lunch in an attempt to avoid the formalities of a birthday celebration over dinner; however, her elaborate plan fails miserably. Scott takes the time to air his grievances regarding Kourtney’s recent engagement. Although it was not Kourtney’s decision to exclude him and their children from this milestone, it happened anyway, and Scott had plenty to say about it. Initially, his hurt was understandable. However, it’s important to remember exactly why he and Kourtney are no longer together. I’ll spare you from a trip down memory lane, but let’s just say that Scott had many chances at redemption.
Kris phones Kourtney after the lunch debacle to gauge her comfort in letting Scott attend Kris’ birthday dinner. Eventually, we get to see the evening play out, and it’s safe to say that Travis and Kourtney made everybody a little uneasy with their intense PDA. To each their own, I suppose.
Unfortunately, the heated discussion between Kris and Scott was not the last of this recurring issue. After painfully watching Kendall Jenner attempt to slice her own cucumber and refusing help from private chefs, she sits down to have a chat with her mom. Scott joins shortly after we realize that it is highly probable that Kendall has never cut her own cucumber, and, of course, drama ensues. After learning that Kendall celebrated her birthday on two separate occasions (neither of which the Talentless owner was invited to), Scott expresses his frustration. Kendall confusingly asserted that the dinner she held was in fact not a celebration since only fifteen people attended. Then, she informed Scott that clubbing with Kourtney and her friends did not count as a birthday party, either. Confusing, I know. We watched as Scott continued to question Kendall, which ultimately led to her storming off out of frustration.

Of course, the internet had something to say about the messy nature of the situation between the family and Scott. Now, I suppose it’s my turn.
Personally, I understood his frustration when Mason, Penelope, and Reign were not invited to Kourtney’s celebration. However, Kris’ decision may have ultimately protected the children from feeling hurt by their engagement, since it was to someone other than their father. While Scott’s emotions are valid and he deserves to be considered, I’m not incredibly fond of how he paints himself as the victim in this situation. Kourtney endured years upon years of Scott’s antics, which were aired throughout the duration of KUWTK. Once she decided it was no longer fair for her to put up with his behavior, she moved on. Of course, Scott (on occasion) would casually mention his love for Kourtney following their split and share how much he wanted to win her over.

Kourtney deserves to be in a happy, loving, functional relationship, even if it comes with enough PDA to make anyone uncomfortable. While I do not believe it’s fair to completely ostracize Scott from family gatherings, I think he should keep the complaints to a minimum. Hopefully, the awkward, uncomfortable territory between him and the Kardashian-Jenners will subside, and they can go back to the family that we know and love. At the end of the day, they are all adults who are perfectly capable of healthy communication.
With reality television comes drama- it’s precisely why we tune into the show every week.
I am certainly looking forward to watching how this all plays out on Thursday.
Strike Out,
