David Koma is the One to Watch

Since 2009 when he put out his first Ready-to-Wear line, David Koma has been gracing the fashion industry with his iconic and bold designs. From leather to lace, Koma experiments with different types of materials and textures to add even more uniqueness to his garments. While his Fall 2022 line saw lots of success in January, I want to take us back to his Resort 2022 RTW collection that sent shock waves through the fashion community. His heavy use of cutouts, sequins and other eccentric add-ons, made it one of my personal favorites from the season.

While the image above doesn’t inherently give off a Summer-ready look, I think the beauty of Koma’s designs is that they don’t have to. Regardless of the season you can wear black leather and heavy cut-outs. The glamor portrayed in this line took the essence of the 70s and added a modern-day twist. Koma said he was especially “inspired by Cher’s ability to go from delicate and feminine to darker and more masculine” look; however, not all of Koma’s pieces for this collection portrayed a brutey, androgynous appeal. Other designs showcased sparkling floral accents, bright colors, and matching tights, which juxtaposed the much harsher silhouettes of others.

I didn’t know who David Koma was before I had to create a fashion report on the different resort shows for my internship last Summer. Since then, he has now become one of my favorite designers. Everything he puts out is so unique and exciting to look at. To me, he is one of the designers that truly makes me passionate about fashion. Not only does Koma put out great designs, but he also lives by and preaches lessons about living in the moment and creating a good work-life balance which I think is kind of rare to see these days. Most people think it’s some sort of flex to be constantly doing something or getting three hours of sleep, when in reality that isn’t setting yourself up for success. Especially in such a cutthroat industry, it is refreshing to hear someone say “give yourself time.”

In the past few months, Koma has dropped his AW22 collection, and these garments are no different than his Resort line when it comes to extravagance and glamor. He took inspiration from sports and combined it with the delicacy of fashion to create a masterpiece.

Koma said himself he emphasized the “sports [as] the “heart of British culture” and wanted that to be seen in his designs this season. Specifically, elements from rugby and football can be found in these pieces. The designer is no stranger to mixing lingerie into his pieces, but this mash-up is definitely one that we haven’t seen before. Another exciting thing to come from Koma’s AW22 launch is the announcement that he is starting to design shoes as well. I can only hope this will be as breathtaking as all of his other articles of clothing.

Everything Mr. David Koma puts out is something to be praised, and I know I am so excited to see what he is planning for the upcoming year. If you haven’t made yourself familiar with his work, I hope this inspired you to follow along with everything he creates, because this man never misses.

Strike Out,
