Daisy Jones and the Resurfacing of 70s Fashion

In 2023, there have been a handful of celebrities, like Bella Hadid, who have served as inspiration for the style of many. This March, a fictional celebrity stepped into the scene of fashion, Daisy Jones (Riley Keough). The release of the Prime Video television series Daisy Jones & the Six has put 70s style back on the map through the storytelling of how a band came to be.

If the entirety of my Tik Tok feed isn’t edits of the show, it’s full of people putting together outfits inspired by the characters. These outfits include 70s staple items such as oversized sunglasses, bell bottoms or flared pants, knee-high boots, breezy shirts/dresses, suede, and the occasional large hat.

Throughout the show, each character undergoes a transformation from being a “nobody” to a “somebody”. The characters’ clothing demonstrates and reflects the transformation of lifestyle, especially Camila Dunne’s clothing. At the beginning of the series, Dunne is more likely to be wearing A-line midi skirts and flowing dresses, but once her husband reaches stardom in LA and she becomes the wife of a rockstar, her style becomes more of a statement. She begins to wear oversized sunglasses, bandanas, hats, and fur coats.

Before she got her start, Jones had a uniform of flared pants, breezy tops, boots, and her trademark gold hoop earrings. As Jones rises to fame, she sticks with her hoop earrings and boots, but she begins to incorporate fur coats, hats, and breezy dresses. As Jones falls further and further into her drug addiction in the show, her makeup becomes darker and darker as well, her style beginning to mimic singer Stevie Nicks’ from the popular band, Fleetwood Mac.

Keyboard player, Karen Sirko, has a darker sense of style, almost always sporting winged eyeliner. Sirko’s looks lean on the more androgynous side, wearing pieces such as turtlenecks, blazers, and jumpsuits paired with leather jackets. The feature that changes the most as she gains fame is the volume of her hair, which grows larger as she evolves in her career. The costume designer for the show, Denise Wingate, explains that Christine McVie, keyboardist/vocalist for Fleetwood Mac, was one of the inspirations behind Sirko’s style.

The men in the band (Billy Dunne, Graham Dunne, Eddie Roundtree, and Warren Rojas) all have very similar styles. Although, there are small differences to pinpoint each of their personalities and roles in the band. Billy, the frontman, wears a fair share of button-up shirts with his signature Ray-Bans, depicting that he likes a classic look. Graham Dunne, the lead guitarist, also wore some button-ups but experimented with tight-fitting shirts, which can depict that he’s younger and more open to other styles. Eddie, the bitter bassist, wears button-ups, leather jackets, an occasional tie, and Ray-Bans. This is a style that mirrors Billy’s but still has an edge, showing how Eddie is jealous of Billy in a way. Warren, the drummer, rocks a mustache, round sunglasses, layered shirts, vests, fur coats, and even layers some necklaces, showing that he is willing to have fun and try new things.
Due to the popularity of the show and how cool the characters are, it’s no wonder that people are starting to admire the 70s style again. Daisy Jones & the Six is an excellent representation of how important fashion is to expression. Daisy being a free-flowing spirit with a dark side wearing free-flowing clothes with dark markup is an example of this. Fans that have watched the show and relate to these characters are adopting the fashion senses that belong to their characters of choice, creating a newfound admiration for the rockstar aesthetic that once peaked long ago.
