Cult Classics In Fashion

When thinking about your favorite movie, what about it stands out? Is it the moment when the main character realizes their best friend was the one all along? Is it the scene that always manages to make you cry, no matter who’s around? Or maybe it’s the iconic slow-motion runway walk with the main character wearing an outfit you will most definitely copy when Halloween comes around. And if you happen to identify with the third, here are some iconic movie fashion moments and where they came from.

Starting off strong, we have the beloved Andy in the 2006 comedy-drama The Devil wears Prada. From journalist turned fashion editor assistant, we watch her wardrobe start to pull heavy influence from designers like Chanel, Zac Posen, Prada, Versace, and more. With this outfit in particular, we can see her thigh-high leather boots are taken straight from Chanel’s 2005 Fall ready-to-wear runway. The layering of Andy’s tweed jacket and skirt set mimics Chanel’s famous tweed ensembles.

Thirty, flirty, and thriving is what she wanted, and this outfit is exactly what she got. The kind-hearted, extroverted Jenna in 13 going on 30 had a playful closet throughout the film. Her looks made neons her neutrals, and blush in the brightest shade of pink colored her cheeks.

Although not in the same colorway or exact pattern, Jenna’s dress took heavy inspiration from the Versace 2003 Spring runway. For this look, the silhouette of an a-line mini dress with a bustier held up by aquamarine cotton jersey straps from the Versace runway finds itself paralleled in the iconic 13 going on 30 dress.

When we say we love Alaïa, we aren’t “a lying.” This iconic dress Cher wore in Clueless was pulled from Azzedine Alaia's 1991 Spring and Summer runway. However, as seen, the dress’s color on the runway is entirely different from the one we see in the movie. At the time of filming, costume designer Mona May was fortunate enough that she was able to know people that knew Alaïa. So Alaïa kindly made a custom version of this runway look for the film. The only version of this dress that can be found for sale is the original color and design seen on the runway.

Young and beautiful are the best words to describe the costumes of the Great Gatsby. Since it was designed by Miuccia Prada, founder of Miu Miu and granddaughter of Mario Prada, this collection counts as a Miu Miu and Prada collaboration of sorts. Leaning into the opulence of the roaring 20s and the lustrous lifestyle of Gatsby himself, Prada designed crystalized flapper gowns, ornately beaded headbands, and opulent sequin gowns to shine on the silver screen incandescently. The collection was created solely for the film, with no intentions of being mass-produced after. However, in the Spring of 2013, there was a limited run of these gowns going for sale –the average price starting at around $19,000.

Wearing a gown as flattering as Andie’s in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days might take you longer than that when trying to lose your next guy. As iconic as this stunning canary yellow gown that’s draped to perfection, it can’t be found on any runway. This memorable rom-com look was custom-made by Carolina Herrera for this film.
