Courrèges Doesn’t Care That You Have Chronic Phone Addiction
Nicolas De Felice, newly appointed Artistic Director for Courrèges, said that one of his main objectives for his latest collection was to “talk to younger people.” What better way to speak to the youth than by having your models with phones in their hands, eyes glued to the screen, embodying carelessness, “whatever, eye-roll,” energy?
The show starts pitch black, with the set filling with smoke seeping from the floor and spreading throughout the room. The set’s design looked like it was ripped straight from a dystopian-space movie, an ode to Andre Courrèges and his “space-age futurism” style of the ‘60s. The music that played during the show resembled something of a James Bond movie, with fast-paced drums and samples that made spectators feel they were spies on an undercover mission in the club. A woman’s voice echoed throughout the show asking, “Is the sky blue?” This could be a jab at the youth and their incessant need for sarcastic responses… or it could mean nothing.
The first model approached from the darkness, with the only light being projected from the phone in her hands. Perhaps a commentary on today’s society being more concerned with what’s on their phones instead of their surroundings.
The collection’s looks felt like they were made for agents from “The Matrix,” sporting an overwhelming amount of black-colored outfits, pleather jackets, and hoodies. The only two outfits in the show with any color were two-sheer dresses, one hot pink and one red.
Courrèges has created a new accessory… sleeves! Some models strutted their outfits without their arms in the sleeves, letting them hang and blow through the wind as they walked, almost as if the models could not even be bothered to put their arms through them. Is this a new trend to be seen, or just a symbolic way of showing the carelessness of the youth?
A consistent look throughout the show was obnoxiously large mirror jewelry that hung on models’ ears, necks, and stomachs. It could be a reach to say that this is a symbolic way of saying that society needs to do some self-reflecting, but fashion is art, and art is open to interpretation!
Other consistent looks included thigh-high boots, huge Courrèges logos stretched across clothing, oversized hoodies and jackets, and sheer, sheer, sheer. It truly is The Year Of Sheer.
Emily Ratajkowski made a surprise appearance on the runway, wearing a black turtle-neck long-sleeve crop top and black baggy pants. Her baby and Eric Andre were not in attendance.
The show ended with the models doing one last walk on the runway, and Felice, rocking his own black leather jacket, coming out to greet the crowd and take a bow. For his first show as the Artistic Director of Courrèges, Felice made a statement and let his presence be known.
