Coming Next Spring: Newest Trends Seen on New York’s Runways
After an extended 18-month lockdown, the long-awaited fashion event in New York City has returned. This year's global Fashion Week events debuted in New York, featuring the 2022 Spring and Summer season collections unlike ever seen before. As the pandemic gradually subsides and COVID restrictions are lifted, we find ourselves wanting to ditch wearing sweats as our daily uniform while “traveling” across from our home workspace to the kitchen and back. Just like the rest of the world, designers are also tired of limiting their ideas to the constraints of the lockdown. This year, New York’s events showed us some optimism in this seemingly never-ending crisis, despite the hardships that we have yet to conquer. Although the world will never be the same, New York’s runways have otherwise reminded us of the beauty of getting dressed up to go out again.
Unlike any other year, New York served as a stage for its participating designers, both high-end and modern fashion, to make their statements. Shifting the focus away from the trending designs, prints, or colors, each designer got to express their vision of their brand and reveal the true aesthetic behind each design. Using lockdown as an element of inspiration, each designer showed their unique side through the display of the upcoming season’s pieces. The trends explained below truly reflect the current period of not-so-post-pandemic uncertainty and the excitement to return to pre-pandemic life.
Beach Bikini? More Like Street Bikini
Lingerie pieces, including bras as elements of outerwear, were introduced to us by many different designers in the past. The bra has ultimately become one of the versatile pieces in a wardrobe that goes with almost anything: suits, pencil skirts, sweats, and cargo pants. As seen on runways this year, it appears that lingerie bras will take a step back to let bikini tops serve as the next staple piece of your wardrobe. Layer it under a button-down or a blazer, brands like Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera, and Maryam Nassir Zadeh state that bikinis are not to be reserved for just the beach.
Game Patterns: Better Than Ever Before
Checkerboard and gingham will make their legacy into Spring 2022; these prints have made their way from the past summer season to continue to rule the Spring 2022 season wardrobe. Designers like Christian Cowan, Coach, and Carolina Herrera incorporated gingham and game pattern prints in pieces varying from feminine dresses to sporty, street-style outfits.
Sheers and See-Throughs: The Return of the “Naked Dress”
Designers like Khaite, Christian Siriano, and several other creatives elevate the going-out apparel by reintroducing the sheer black, almost see-through pieces. Although the design is provocative in its revealing nature, its intelligent construction hugs your body and smoothly defines its silhouette. No more lockdown means no more limits.
Bubble Hems
Puffy, voluminous dresses and elements (e.g., sleeves) will be trending this upcoming season than ever before. Such simple, yet drama-seeking design will grab the attention of anyone; such designer’s method has proven to elevate any evening or even casual looks
