Business to Casual: Where to Draw the Line
It can be challenging to transform everyday wardrobe pieces into work-appropriate outfits, especially with so many unspoken rules—clothing that’s too fitted, too short, or covered in logos can easily come across as unprofessional. Striking the right balance between clothing we feel comfortable in and clothing that is appropriate for work can be a challenge; even when we manage to put together an outfit that meets workplace standards, it often clashes with our style, leaving us feeling uncomfortable and disconnected from our self-expression. Fortunately, a few versatile staples can seamlessly balance professionalism and personal style, allowing for a polished look that caters to your personality.
Plain, Long-Sleeve Tops
A long-sleeved top is a staple many of us already have in our closets that can be easily incorporated into business casual outfits. Unlike most office attire, long-sleeve tops can have a flattering, fitted look without appearing unprofessional, as they still cover most of the body. Picking a top with a color palette and cut that matches your current daily wardrobe will allow you to express yourself while adhering to the standards of your workplace. If you want a top with a bit more “flare” to it, I recommend experimenting with different types of tops, such as button-downs or shirts with shoulder pads. Pairing your top with narrow trousers or a knee-length pencil skirt will create an effortlessly polished appearance.
Blazers
Adding a blazer to your outfit will automatically make it look more professional, and it is easy to grab virtually any shirt from your closet to wear under it; you don’t have to worry about if your undershirt is a bit too cropped or exposes your shoulders since they'll be covered anyways. You can even wear a blazer over a random dress sitting in your closet, and it will still look business casual. If a blazer isn’t really your style and you prefer something a bit more comfortable, you can layer a sweater over a tank top to elevate your outfit into work attire. This look is especially useful for busy mornings when you may not have time to pick out an outfit—you can basically grab anything and throw an overcoat over it to fit your office dress code.
Accessories
If you've found the perfect work outfit but feel it lacks a personal touch, accessories can help express your style effortlessly. A statement necklace paired with bold, chunky earrings can instantly elevate your look. However, moderation is key—too much jewelry can appear unprofessional. Stick to one or two standout pieces to maintain a polished and refined appearance. A stylish bag is another addition that can add a pop of color to your outfit and tie your final look together. A large tote, crossbody, or briefcase are some corporate-friendly options that you can choose from. A statement belt can also be a subtle way to enhance your outfit. It can define your silhouette and bring your final look together.
