Jeremy Scott, Moschino-isms, and Jungle Red

If you’re looking for a glamorous, star-studded FW 2021 show that has it all, look no further than Moschino. Jeremy Scott, the brand’s creative director, never disappoints. Vogue calls him, “the master of meta”. Their Spring 21 show continues to be at the forefront of everyone’s minds, as a marionette show featuring dolls of the most important members of the fashion community is not to be overshadowed any time soon. The Italian fashion house founded in 1983 is no stranger to bold designs, and this reputation was upheld in Thursday’s show.

Something that you will not find in this show is anything reminiscent of comfort- wear or odes to the pandemic.  “I guess I live in such a fantasy land I didn’t really think of it that way. I mean, you have to get dressed anyway, don’t you?” Scott quipped, rolling his eyes at continued fashion forecasts for comfort-wear. “Comfort schmomfort! What we need now more than ever is fantasy and glamour and things that make you feel wonderful, and I don’t think sweatpants do that”, Scott said for Vogue.

The Moschino FW 2021 is titled ‘Jungle Red’, inspired by a 1930s George Cukor film titled The Women. The Women’s plot begins at an expensive Manhattan salon, where high-society ladies go to get the newest nail color: Jungle Red.

Jeremy Scott curated this season’s show to make the watcher feel immersed in Old Hollywood while taking us on a trip through looks for every occasion post-lockdown. The show is staged as a parlor show with notable guests including Stella McCartney, Dita von Teese, and Winnie Harlow. The opening scene features Hailey Bieber (if you hadn’t heard enough name-drops already) showing a pinstriped career outfit. Several models follow in vintage, fitted suits, showing a collection of what to wear to work post-pandemic. The voyage then continues to the weekend life in the countryside, headed by Miranda Kerr in a dress featuring prints of cows on a prairie and a barn- shaped purse. The next few looks are reconfigured burlap sacks in the shape of high fashion silhouettes. After this, women at a museum are shown in contrasting colored skirt suits viewing art. They step away, and the ‘art’ is revealed as models in watercolor, flowing dresses. To end the parlor show, a safari collection is shown of chic animal-inspired outfits.

At the conclusion of the parlor show, and our trip through fashion dream land, the featured guests show their collection of  ‘night on the town’ looks. Dramatic and bold are understatements to the ensembles featured, including glamorous ball gowns and Stella McCartney’s formal baseball cap and shoe- shaped purse look. Nothing, not even the fully fringe metallic dresses,  could have prepared us for the finale moment though. Dita von Teese makes her way down the center aisle in a heart- inspired dress, and turns away from the audience to reveal a heart- shaped derrière cut out. Talk about iconic.

Overall, if you’re looking for over the top and spectacular, Moschino is the fashion house for you. Jeremy Scott will rest at nothing to make not only a memorable show but an iconic line.

Strike Out,
