Back to the Basics
The beauty industry is undergoing a remarkable transformation. Celebrities have begun to embrace an increasingly youthful aesthetic compared to the pronounced looks we have grown used to seeing on red carpets and movie premieres in previous decades. Perfection was once synonymous with airbrushed skin and heavily defined features, but this recent movement of not altering “imperfections” embraces authenticity and individuality. Besides, it allows for more representation of what real bodies look like and provides the comforting idea that celebrities are not so different from us.
In the early 2000s, beauty standards became almost unachievable to many due to the introduction of heavy filler and other cosmetic procedures. Icons such as the Kardashians served as a blueprint for plump lips and curvaceous body types. Country singer Dolly Parton is another example of someone who has achieved this look by enhancing her features through several face lifts, breast augmentations, eyelid surgery, botox, and fillers. These drastic changes created a new definition of aging and embraced the particular look attainable through cosmetic procedures. For several years, many attempted to achieve this specific look, which led to, as some would say, a “copy and paste” trend. Since attaining this look is costly and time-consuming, those who could not keep up with this trend developed unhealthy habits such as insecurities, body dysmorphia, and comparing themselves to these idols.
Although filler and Botox are still evident in today’s society, there has been a noticeable change in how celebrities go about it. Setting an example for many people, Hailey Bieber, Lily-Rose Depp, and Kylie Jenner have begun to shift towards a more natural look. In the past, Kylie Jenner played an important role in popularizing lip fillers and extenuating her curves. Jenner played a pivotal role in introducing these enhancements, especially to younger women. These drastic changes at such an early age made many question whether or not their bodies were properly developing. Ultimately, the rise of Botox and filler made many young girls appear older than they were.
The reduction in the number of cosmetic procedures individuals are getting done is significantly less than before. Many other celebrities have publicly talked about their alterations over the past few years, some speaking out expressing regret. Lately, Kylie has shown a preference for a more subtle look. She has dissolved her once iconic lip filler and toned down previous procedures she has had done, creating the illusion of aging backward. This shift has also appeared in male celebrities such as Simon Cowell, who has reduced his use of Botox, which made him unrecognizable at one point.
This refreshing change has allowed people of all ages to embrace their natural features and feel more comfortable in their skin. Regarding beauty trends, celebrities usually serve as a primary example of inspiration to people globally. Beauty is forever evolving, and there is no specific definition of what it looks like. Thankfully, this trend shows the significance of accepting your distinct features and embracing what makes you unique to others.
