Are Celebrity Brands Worth the Hype?

Growing up, I was the victim of the celebrity perfume lines, and every year I would add the hottest new celeb fragrance to my Christmas list. Our Moment perfume by One Direction, Sweet Like Candy by Ariana Grande, and of course Killer Queen by Katy Perry. I had them all, but nowadays, celebrities have ditched the perfume industry and have joined forces with skincare, beauty, and fashion industries. So why are these industries the big celebrity trend, the answer is simple, it’s what we’re buying. Celebrities are simply following the money (I can’t blame them; I’d do it too!) Are these brands worth the hype? Or do we just seem persuaded enough to buy products with our favorite celebrities on the front cover? Let’s take a closer look at some of the hottest celebrity brands.

Fenty Beauty

Fenty Beauty is a cosmetic brand launched in 2017 by the famous singer, songwriter, and now businesswoman, Rihanna. Known for its unique lipsticks, pigmented highlights, and foundation shades for a diverse range of skin types this brand generated over $570 million in revenue after only being open for 15 months.

Fenty Beauty has changed the makeup industry, putting a bigger focus on diverse shades, clean cosmetics, and eco-conscious packaging. Fenty Beauty products are guaranteed to impress and deliver Rihanna’s natural Bajan glow.

Kylie Cosmetics

Kylie Jenner has always been in the hot seat for denying having lip fillers done in May 2015. The beauty mogul has stated that her insecurities about her lips, inspired her passion to enter the cosmetics field. A brand that once started as smooth, creamy lip kits, has transformed into a brand worth $1.2 billion, with everything you need in your makeup and skincare routines. The brand is known for its concealers, highlighters, blushes, and eyeshadow palettes, as well as skincare cleansers, exfoliators, and creams. The cosmetic company has received amazing reviews, but I would advise you to lead with caution, as some of her products may have a cheaper dupe out there!

Kim Kardashian’s Skims

Kylie Cosmetics, Kendall Jenner’s 818 tequila brand, Khloe Kardashian’s Good American denim line, I know, I know, another Kardashian, I swear this one is different. Kim Kardashian West’s hourglass figure is iconic, and anyone could spot her out from a crowd, so it comes as no surprise, that shapewear may be an easy item for Kim Kardashian to market. The brand promotes products that will tone, lift, and enhance your body’s natural shape. Skims is known for its shapewear, underwear, and loungewear that come in inclusive sizes and a wide range of skin tone shades. The brand features items to seamlessly be worn under all types of clothing to create a smooth and contoured look. The brand is successful, and shapewear isn’t an oversaturated market, so the Kardashian brand may be worth it. For me personally, I don’t own or wear shapewear, but I would be willing to give it a try, but I can’t promise that it would look the same on me as it does on Kim Kardashian!

Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty

I have always been a Selena Gomez fan, from Alex Russo to her hit after hit songs, she has proven time and time again that she is a woman that can do it all! Known for her natural looks and vulnerable music, she has always been someone we can trust. She recently launched her cosmetics brand Rare Beauty and its mission is something I think all of us can get behind. Selena believes her brand can create an impact on the beauty industry by breaking down unrealistic standards of perfection and embracing our uniqueness and rare beauty. The brand promotes self-acceptance and is on a mission to help everyone celebrate individuality by redefining what beauty means.

Selena’s vision with the brand is to create a safe space in beauty and beyond that support mental well-being for everyone. “This is makeup made to feel good in, without hiding what makes you unique,” Selena says. The products themselves have received positive reviews, but the brand is more focused on the mission. The website offers support resources, articles on mental health, and the Rare Impact Fund where 1% of all sales are donated to help fund philanthropic foundations, corporate partners, and individuals in our community to increase access to mental health services in educational settings. Rare Beauty has some great products, but the story behind the brand is far more meaningful.

Every celebrity has some sort of product and brand nowadays, but some of them have proven their success. Some celebrities have been able to use their platform to promote positive missions and inclusivity in the beauty industry.
