138 Hours Later: Sharing Some of the Best Songs on My 2,000-Song Playlist

During my junior year of high school, I decided to curate the ultimate rap playlist. The playlist has amassed 2,496 songs since its conception, and in the process, I have listened to all types of rap. This experience has allowed me to navigate through the mainstream and uncover the underground. These songs will show you a side of rap you likely did not know existed, introducing you to artists that may become your new favorites.

Jaden: “Icon? - Electric”

When Jaden Smith released the song “Icon” on his debut album Syre in 2017, it exploded. Upon its release, the song earned double platinum status and ascended the Billboard charts. However, many people do not know that Jaden Smith released Syre: The Electric Album a year later, featuring “Icon?” as an electric remake. It’s a far more mellow listen than its predecessor and transcends modern conceptions of rap.

Bakar: “The Mission”

Bakar, a British artist, released the song “The Mission” in 2022. It is not a rap song, and Bakar is not a rapper. Yet, Bakar’s lyrical prowess and the rhythmic flow of his words are cast against the legacy of the rap genre. It’s a chill, laidback, and easy listen, and its lyrics carry a message of hope for the world's future.

Isaiah Rashad: “Dressed Like Rappers”

In 2016, Isaiah Rashad released his debut album, The Sun’s Tirade. The album contained features from prominent artists such as SZA, Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, and Zacari. My favorite song off the album, “Dressed Like Rappers,” has a unique beat that Isaiah Rashad’s voice compliments exceptionally well.

Childish Gambino: “12.38”

Childish Gambino’s “12.38” features 21 Savage, Ink, and Kadhja Bonet. It is six minutes longer than most songs, but every moment is enjoyable. The beat is very lo-fi-esque, making for a very easy, relaxing listen—perfect for driving late at night.

Smino: “Z4L”

Smino’s “Z4L” features Bari and Jay2. It’s similar to the last couple of songs in the sense that its melodic beat is hypnotic and listenable. Even if you are not the biggest fan of rap, you may enjoy this song since it doesn’t conform to the genre's norms. The song was released in 2018, but I still listen to it as though it were released yesterday. The lyrics are odd, making the song refreshingly unconventional.

Earl Sweatshirt: “Molasses”

Earl Sweatshirt’s “Molasses” features the iconic Wu-Tang Clan member, RZA. Earl Sweatshirt is not your traditional rapper, making a career off his unique flow. Molasses was released as part of Earl Sweatshirt’s debut album, Doris. The album was released ten years ago, yet the album and its songs remain timeless.

I encourage you to listen to each of the songs if you are interested in broadening your rap horizons. Each song is included on my Spotify playlist, which you should also check out if you intend to improve your listening habits in anticipation of the Spotify-wrapped season.

Strike Out,
